Aims and objectives:
The symposium will provide an up-to-date discussion of hormonal therapy of prostate cancer, focussing on key issues in current management, changing use and future treatment options. The symposium aims to provide useful guidance for the urologist looking to gain a clearer understanding of the key issues surrounding the optimisation of hormonal treatment. Objectives After attending the symposium, delegates should:
· Appreciate the historic role of GnRH agonists in the treatment of prostate cancer
· Understand the limitations of GnRH agonists, particularly testosterone surge
· Be aware of issues concerning risk stratification, intermittent therapy and the timing of hormonal therapy
· Understand how new agents that better mimic orchidectomy and offer fast, profound and sustained suppression of testosterone, without surge, can provide new therapeutic options
· Be familiar with the most recent data for the GnRH blocker, degarelix
